Change Toolbar
Tools > Options. Under Advanced, select Enable Experimental Features.
(While there turn off Java)
Go to menu View > User Interface > Contextual Groups
Moving cells by click drag
To drag a cell (on Windows and Linux) click in the cell and hold the button down, drag the cursor into an adjoining cell and back to the original cell, release the button. The cell stays selected, then click in the cell again, hold the button down and drag where you want. With cell group just highlight the cells and then click and drag.
Auto Sum: I always forget the symbol is on left bottom of tool bar.
Change Default Save As to .xlsx
Writer
Tools > Options from Calc sticks
Must do:
Go to menu View > User Interface > Contextual Groups
Change Default Save to .docx

LibreOffice is an acceptable alternative for Microsoft Office. Why bother you might ask. For one, I tire of the invasive install of MS Office putting its grubby little hands everywhere. But mostly I need an alternative when someone calls and needs a "copy". No one can find the original disks, serial numbers and on it goes. And even if found, it probably no longer handles the current file formats, not to mention the $100 for a new copy. Why not just bypass all that and use LibreOffice?
LibreOffice can be discouraging at first because it is molasses slow to load. There are a couple easy setting that will solve the problem. I assume it has lower initial graphical settings to assist operating on a wide range of environments out of the box. Anyway, here are the settings.
The Settings for LibreOffice reside in the Writer module:
1. Open Tools - Options - Advanced
Uncheck "Use a java runtime environment"
2. - Memory - Graphics Cache
Use for LibreOffice 128 MB
Memory per object 20 MB
Of course, nothing beats Office for functionality and elegance but most people have little need for such sophistication and will be completely satisfied with LibreOffice.
