Magic Wormhole File Transfer With Rymdport

Magic Wormhole File Transfer With Rymdport
  Why use Rymdport
Magic Wormhole requires Python and is run in the Command Prompt.
Rymdport is a Magic Wormhole GUI written in Go, so it contains everything to run and is cross-platform.
  Where to get it
Rymdport is a GitHub project and can be downloaded from there.
Or it can be installed with Winget: winget install Jacalz.Rymdport
  How to run it
After install you could search for the exe file located in AppData to start it.
Rymdport is added to the environment variables, so typing Rymdport in CMD will run it.
Eventually, it should show up in the start menu.
  The Passphrase
It will create a passphrase, or you can create a custom passphrase.
The passphrase must contain numbers like "123" separated by a hyphen - and some letters "abc"
If I'm using it on my own PCs, I use a simple phrase that is easy to remember and type.
If I am sending to someone, I would use the phrase Rymdport creates and send it to the person receiving.
  How does it work?
It creates a peer-to-peer connection, zips the files and sends.
This is why you can send a folder or multiple folders.
  Does it work?
It is simple and lightning fast.
I have not used it on huge files yet, so I don't know if it chokes on big ones.
Ok, I just transferred a Win11.iso from Minnesota to Florida. I was no speed demon, but it didn't choke.
I need to try it the other direction. In MN I have Spectrum with slow upload. In Florida I have fiber that uploads at 700+ even over wireless.

Transfer Between PC and Android

Sharing should be easy but what the heck?
So while you are searching for that perfect solution . . .  just do this:

Install Snapdrop on Android.
Choose the "pairdrop" server.

Then on the PC open pairdrop.net

ShareDrop works with browser only. Simply send a link or scan the UPC.

Or just use Mega

File Sharing Updated

Have you ever said, "I can see the PC on the network but I can't access it"?

On Same Network Cross Platform
LocalSend (my new favorite) winget install -e --id LocalSend.LocalSend (zip the files for speed)
ShareDrop works well. It's a web platform. Not sure of limitations.
Send seems to work also.

*These have gone off the rails so just set up ssh, ftp or web server and get on with life.
Servers
HFS web server, Xlight ftp server
Clients

Not On Same Network
Large Files and Auto Delete
... Wormhole (10gb self delete encrypted)
Rymdport uses Wormhole and is easier.

Small Files and Auto Delete (pain on Android phone)
... Sendanywhere

Large Files
... pCloud (May be best right now)

Large Files and Manual Delete
... Mega

Onionshare (Slow and may choke on large files but I like the concept.)
Receiving end needs to use Tor for the onion share address.

. . . Or Better yet SSH (Look Here)

Rymdport.exe (It can be portable also)
.. winget install Jacalz.Rymdport
It's a GUI for Magic Wormhole written in Go, so it's cross-platform.
It can transfer folders, not just files.
Search for the rymdport.exe, but CMD responds to rymdport and starts the GUI.
A custom passphrase can be used, but the pattern must start with a number. Example 123-abc
The number assigns a "room" on the server for communication. It's lightning fast.
Not sure about how it responds to size of transfers.

HFS - HTTP File Server

HFS - HTTP File Server:
Also available in Symenu.
If you are struggling to get Windows to access another PC on the network and need to move some files, this is a good temporary solution. Yes, you could just access the window share with the PC's IP but you do need to set up a share and then remove the share when you are done. With HFS just drag a fold in to share and when you close HFS, you are done.

The program is a single, stand-alone file. Just start the program.
Do this . . . Be sure the server is started.
Don't bother setting up user and password for local networks.
Drag folder or folders in and choose "real folder" option.
On the second PC, open a browser and enter the address of the server. Remember to include the port.
Example: 192.168.1.34:80
Download must be a file. Click on the file to open/download. It will not download a folder.
Example: You have a folder with MiniToolPartitionManager and want to transfer. You must zip the fold to a file. We could say it's a "file" server and not a "folder" server :)

Syncthing vs Resilio

edit 2019-09-15:
Just gave Syncthing a new look and I like it.
SyncTrayzor is a good version right now.

One Possible Setup:
If you have a PC that is always or often running then this may be a good setup.  Currently I am using this to make files available that I want on all Systems. These are current files only. It is more a transfer folder.

The Collector-PC is also peered to the local main bookkeeping PC and receives a backup of that PC's backup. In other words the bookkeeping PC backs up to a second internal disk. Syncthing grabs those files and drops it on the Collector. The collector then has 2 Sync folders.

I do not sync documents, photos, etc. It is easy to access these files with Anydesk remotely.

Syncthing vs Resilio

Which is best?
It depends on how one would use them.

I use 5 different PCs regularly during the year in different locations. I do not want to keep any folders in sync. I want to use the software to transfer files quickly from one computer to another. Sometimes these files are large. Either program will do the job but Resilio is designed to run automatically and continuously. I don't need that.

I would remotely access the desktop, copy the file/files I want into the share folder and start the sync program. Then I would start the sync program on the receiving computer. Once the files are downloaded, I would move them to another folder, go back the the remote computer, delete the files from the share folder and turn off sync.

At this point it seems Syncthing is all I need. I would love to have Resilio's selective sync on the paid version but the cost seems too high for the added convenience. Other use cases may justify the cost.

If I had to actually keep folders in sync, i would use Resilio. Lower resource demand and no terminal window for two reasons.

qBittorrent - Use It

I previously used uTorrent until it started "installing" itself (whatever that means to uTorrent). It just became irritating. My favorite now is qBittorrent. It just works - but more to the point it is easy to set up pausing the seed after download is completed. Don't be an idiot - use VPN.

BitTorrent Sync

2019-01-21 I don't like any of these . . .

2017-06-22 Now Called Resilio (BTsync) seems easier to use this time I tried it but I think Syncthing is better for me.
(I have found this a pain in the butt to use)
Linking your personal computers and their selected folders is easy with Dropbox. Sometimes it is uncomfortable leaving your files accessible to a third party like Dropbox or those who hack Dropbox. BitTorrent Sync may be a viable solution. This will set up private BitTorrent between computers. I think this is outstanding and much faster than other methods.

It would even be great for sharing large files with others. They will need to be able and willing to use BTSync. If they are not then maybe they don't need the file :)

I installed it on two computers. Let the program install a default folder in the user account and dropped a test file into one folder. I copied the "secret" code into the second install. The file magically appeared in the second computer's default folder. New sync folders can easily be added or deleted.

Under "show folder preferences" a one time code can be created with a 24 hour time limit with full or read only access. This could work for large file transfer to people. It would be easy to drop a new folder containing the file into your Bittorrent Sync and send the code to someone.
No third party server is involved and transfers are stated as being secure. Steve Gibson says it is secure. (go in to about 1 hr 7 min)

Setup is mindlessly easy but I have only done this on a local network as yet and not off site.

Here is a good little YouTube explanation.

Setting up mobile is completely crazy. Install BTSync on the mobile and create a folder. Then create a folder on a PC that is only for things you want synchronized to the phone. When you go to preferences on the PC and select "connect to mobile device" a QR code will pop up. Scan it with the mobile BTSync and the "secret" will be read into the mobile app. I believe you would want a special limited folder for mobile because of the mobile's limited storage.

It would take some planning to handle the storage with BTSync. Unlike Dropbox there is no cloud storage to hold the data and folders can not exist inside of folders. This is a completely cool and effective method of syncing and sharing data.

But honestly, the cloud is very handy and day to day I will still use Dropbox on a regular basis. And BTS for more specialty transfers.

JDownloader for downloading multiple files from Rapidshare (cough)

I gave up using this -
home:index [JDownloader]
JDownloader is open source, platform independent and written completely in Java. It simplifies downloading files from One-Click-Hosters like Rapidshare.com or Megaupload.com

Comments: These programs can work and not work depending what the hosts are doing at the moment. I have tried others with little success. Currently I have had good success with JDownloader. If a huge file has been split into several parts and is hosted somewhere, just start JD and copy the links. JD will detect the copy and load the que.

Why bother? If the files are on a single site, many of these sites have waiting periods for multiple files. With JD you just let it works and eventually you will have all the files, if you are lucky.

Be awake with installation. JD "offers" to install other stuff. Just say no. It wants to install FlashGet and the answer is not "no" but "cancel".

UIF Files Are Troublesome

Did you end up with a .uif file? What do you do with it? If you have MagicISO no problem. Many people dislike MagicISO because it makes these proprietary .uif files. But you can extract this .uif to a standard .iso with a free program named uif2iso. You do not need MagicISO. Just search for this handy stand alone program. I don't know if it works with every .uif file but it has worked for me.

Port Forwarding Program

Download Simple Port Forwarding | Simple Port Forwarding™
Comments: This interesting little program will handle port forwarding. As yet I can't see why it is any improvement over directly tweaking the router's setup page but the program is kinda cool. Maybe it could be useful, someday ... for something.
