Veyon Setup

Even though the Veyon idea great I gave up do to some Windows machines having problems with static IPs. Anydesk just works. To be fair, I use old PCs so the fault may lie in Win10 compatibility with the old network adapters in the PC and not Windows 10 itself.

On the control machine
Install master and client Veyon
Method key file
Create key home (or something)
Export public key to desktop
Check access is administrators
Add new location home
add new pc home-pc1
add host address fixed ip for the remote pc

go to client
install client only
import public key name it home
add new location home
add host address static ip (be sure it is outside the router's DHCP range)
The DHCP range is probably the first 120 slots so choose something like 192.168.1.201

Veyon master needs to be restarted when changes are made

I still prefer Anydesk but Veyon is great for monitoring and maintaining multiple pcs on the same network. You can send files from the master to the client. You do need a static IP for the clients . . . and good luck getting a Windows 10 PC to keep a static IP to work long term. Some do and some don't.

Any Desk Another Remote Desktop

http://anydesk.com/remote-desktop

Works great.
1. Download the exe file.
2. Move the exe file to location you wish to keep it before starting.
3. After your first "trial" session it will ask if you wish to install - do it.
4. After install, I don't think you need the exe file anymore but shutting down the process in order to move or delete the file is advanced so it saves time for beginners.
5. You will be asked if you desire to run unattended and it will install the service.
6. Remember your address and password.

As of now there is no cost or limits. File transfer is simple right click, copy/paste.

The service uses 8180K of memory were as Ammyy uses aroung 2100K

AMMYY Remote Connection

2019-01-20 We don't use this currently.after Anydesk arrived.

Note: Ammyy has a 15 minute per month limit per PC. If that is a problem then currently AnyDesk is a better answer. We prefer to use Ammyy for consistency but in a pinch we use AnyDesk. I expect AnyDesk to charge at some point. We can buy lifetime Ammyy license on our host machines and the clients rarely exceed 15 minutes per month.

It is easier to have the client simply run Ammyy and give you the address. Once you are on, just install Ammyy service yourself if you wish to have unattended access. Have the client make an Ammyy folder, put ammyy.exe into the folder and move the folder to where you want to keep it. The host can not move the exe when Ammyy is running. Maybe the exe is unnecessary after the service is installed but I have not tested so just tuck it away somewhere.

Later versions seem to be backward compatible and will read the address book of older versions. Ammyy address book and setting .bin reside in C:\ProgramData\AMMYY and any Ammyy version you run will find the .bin files. A previous version of Ammyy will not run a later version client so host should always download the newest version. 3.4 host will not run a 3.5 client but 3.5 host will run a 3.4 client. The only additional file Ammyy creates in the exe folder is a log file. So Ammyy resides in 3 locations: the folder containing the exe and log file, the ammyy program data folder and the service. Removing all three of these deletes Ammyy from the system.

This is how to install AMMYY as a service. http://www.ammyy.com/en/downloads.html

The program does not install. Simply run the program but put it in a folder first and place that folder on C: drive in a folder called Portable Programs (make the folder if it does not exist).

Start Ammy and follow the graphic below. This installs the service.

Now go to Settings and follow the graphic below. Leave "any" as computer id but enter a password. I will need the password.

I will also need your id as in the graphic below.

I think 3.4 Ammyy starts the service and chooses automatic. If you need to check, go to Start and type "services". It should be the first thing on the menu. Check if Ammyy is started and set to automatic.

Ammyy Remote Desktop

Ammyy is a slick and free remote desktop tool. File transfer works fine. Ammyy says all traffic is encrypted but I would use some caution as to what I was transferring.

Ammyy does not install so deleting the program removes it. Ammyy does place a "data" folder in C:\ProgramData that should be deleted separately if Ammyy is deleted. Also if you have instructed Ammyy to install the Ammyy service, you should tell Ammyy to Ammyy>service>remove that service before you delete the program. The service can easily be removed later but that is a different issue and instruction.

When Ammyy is started it provides an id number. That number will be remembered on the system and is used to connect by either providing that number to another party or using it yourself to access the PC from another location. If you have installed Ammyy as a service (and have that service started), Ammyy does not need to be running on the host computer in order to access the host from a remote computer.

When leaving Ammyy service running it is a good idea to set up permissions and password.

Download speed varies I'm sure but here is an example: No speed demon but gets the job done.

I have not yet been able to connect using an IP address for some reason and have only had success with client id numbers. This is while using the Ammyy service. Maybe IP would work with Ammyy program running on both.

I see a lot of warnings on Google about Ammyy scams and dangers. As far as I can tell this amounts to someone with a heavy accent calling and saying, "I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help you". If you are stupid enough to listen then you have more problems than Ammyy.

I like it for the following:
No install
Easy (once you realize the service must be started if Ammyy is not running) (the service will start with reboot if set to automatic or you must start it manually if no reboot).
File transfer works
Fairly fast
No need to forward ports
Free with no limitations or nagging about upgrading.

I was not able to connect with someone in a hotel with a high speed internet access provider and splash page. I assume the HSIAP's router was blocking the ports somehow and I am trying to figure that out.

List Of Remote Desktop Software

Ammyy seems easy.
http://www.ammyy.com/en/admin_screenshots.html

LogMeIn of course is very easy but I hate being tied to them.
TeamViewer

Chrome Remote Desktop I need to try this but I don't think file transfer is possible.

Access Your Desktop From Android

Splashtop it worked out of the shoot but then gave up and so did I.

Access your windows desktop on your Android device and maybe even iPad. Yes your desktop needs to be running. I'm not clear if you get a number of days trial. I set it up on the home computer and everything worked fine. When I set it up on the office computer I couldn't get by the "buy me now" page. But maybe for $16 per year it is a good deal? It will take more investigating. On the home computer I could run everything.
Does one paid account allow several computers and several devices ... hard to tell.

Checking LogMeIn again. Yikes $39 annual for each device or each account ... I don't get it.

Mikogo is an easy-to-use cross-platform desktop sharing tool

http://www.mikogo.com/
I have installed but yet to try. Install was painless but had to stop the auto start request.

Mikogo needs to be installed to start a session but joining a session only requires clicking "join" at the top of the Mikogo site.

They emailed me relentlessly for weeks trying to get me to use it. Ammyy is the way to go.

Ventoy On Secure Boot

I turn of secure boot in every BIOS. However, some do not show that setting. Here is an option that has worked for me. Boot the PC and launc...
