File Structure and Naming

I was binge-watching Bull and got stalled on a couple of episodes, so I downloaded them.
Now how do I stream them from my PC to my Shield?
Plex worked but it's not the easiest way.
Put them on a portable drive and plug it in.
I think I played them with VLC but I can't remember.
Everything just worked with no fuss.
