EVO Froyo and Battery Life

I am seeing complaints about Froyo and battery life. It appeared true and somewhere I saw a hint to remove Advanced App Killer so I did it. I went through my list again and made sure wi-fi did not sleep, sync other than Google was turned off, etc. and my battery life is great. My idle time barely moves once I get around 70%. No, I am not watching movies. I am trying to run the battery to zero (for some reason) and it's going to be more than 24 hours of my normal use. Happy, happy.

Edit: I'm half way through day 2 and still 38%. Just using as phone and some email.

Call Free With Gmail

Call phones from Gmail - Official Gmail Blog
Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”

Comments: Google has added free VOIP right from Gmail if you have a Google Voice number (and why don't you?). You will need Google Video Chat installed on you computer. The "Call Phone" entry will appear under your "Chat" section in Gmail. They are dishing it out so it took me a day after launch for it to appear. I have only made one call so far but it sounded great. What part of free is a bad thing?

Rooting EVO with Froyo

[Program] Updated: 8-5-10: 1 Click SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 Edition - xda-developers: "If you amazingly got your EVO with 2.2 or flashed it, theres no way to root 2.2 as of YET!!!"

Follow the above site for availability on Froyo.

Ok it has been rooted. but I'm waiting for a simpler way to come along.

Unrevoked 3 appears ready for Froyo

Swype is a great way to type with on screen keyboard

Swype is a great way to "type" with an on screen keyboard. Even though EVO's keyboard is good, I still was one finger and slow. Swype changed all that. The guide above will help you install and use it. Some data fields are slow to recognize the cursor but the advantages far outweigh any inconvenience.

Swype is not a market app so installation takes a few different steps. I used the apk file from here. Trouble finding the file? Here is a direct link for now. updated 9-21-2010

This is one app I would buy if they start charging. It is still in beta so should get even better.

Try this link for a themed version (I have not tried).

EVO Wonderful - Battery Life Is Fine

Edit: Did 2.2 Froyo and Appkiller is not very effective anymore. Apps keep starting so battery life is suffering. I suppose I will need to root this thing eventually.

I have now had my EVO for a day and a half. It is fantastic. The OS is quick to super quick and silky smooth. I am surprised the EVO and Android is so much better than the Palm Pre and WebOS. The faster processor is part of it, but even though WebOS is good, Android is awesome. Navigation is a dream and adding/uninstalling apps. could not be easier. Everything it does is wow. The big screen makes EVO ultra usable.

I did the battery saving hints listed on the web and after 12 hours of using it as a phone, email and some playing around, I still have 72% battery. I can definitely live with that. Not to beat on Palm but my Pre had a tough time lasting the day sitting dormant on the coffee table.

The on screen keyboard is very responsive but I still prefer buttons. Oh well, the keyboard works well and I'll get used to it. Using this big boy with one hand while driving is life threatening. Maybe when I get used to it, I will stay out of oncoming traffic. Having the screen at 25% brightness in daylight to save battery didn't help. Hey, I'm still learning.

Finally I have a smart phone worth using.

Stuff to Start: (yes you have to turn stuff off when not using it)
Apps:
Advanced Task Killer (Froyo may not like this for battery life) I think it may be better to manually control things so you know what is happening. ATK make you "think" you are controlling things without really understanding. Anyway things simply started up again under Froyo.
Curvefish:
  1. AutoSync OnOff
  2. Brightness Level
  3. GPS OnOff
  4. SilentMode OnOff
  5. Wi-Fi OnOff
  6. BatteryLife

Restore Windows 7 Security Settings To Default With Security Restore

Restore Windows 7 Security Settings To Default With Security Restore: "Quite often we come across Windows security errors such as Registry Disabled or You don’t have permission to access. Troubleshooting these Windows errors can be challenging because there are so many possible causes (in most of the cases it’s because of a virus or malicious item)."

Comments: Could be useful if totally lost, can't say I would have needed it yet.

Voice Recognition in Firefox

Firesay :: Add-ons for Firefox
Firesay enables you to surf the web using voice commands.

Say your search queries instead of typing them.
Say which sites you want to visit instead of typing URL addresses.
Say what TV shows you want to watch on Hulu

This does work and is entertaining, maybe useful. Limited commands but new.

Logitech Alert 750i

Review: Logitech Alert 750i Master System Camera
The 750i is a great camera with a few minor problems. This is obviously a new product line of Logitech and they’re working on improving the software over time. I’m also going to review its outdoor brother, the 750e, next but generally Logitech’s Alert solution seems to be stable, usable, and almost idiot-proof. The fact that you can get a camera up and running in a few minutes is fabulous and barring a few issues with networking and motion detection, it’s a great way to keep an eye on the kids, a summer home, your special “grow area,” or the dogs.
Might be the one to try. Not even available yet.

Voice Actions for Android

Just speak it: introducing Voice Actions for Android - Official Google Mobile Blog
To use Voice Actions, tap the microphone button on the Google search box on your home screen, or press down for a few seconds on the physical search button on your phone to activate the “Speak Now” screen

JDownloader for downloading multiple files from Rapidshare (cough)

I gave up using this -
home:index [JDownloader]
JDownloader is open source, platform independent and written completely in Java. It simplifies downloading files from One-Click-Hosters like Rapidshare.com or Megaupload.com

Comments: These programs can work and not work depending what the hosts are doing at the moment. I have tried others with little success. Currently I have had good success with JDownloader. If a huge file has been split into several parts and is hosted somewhere, just start JD and copy the links. JD will detect the copy and load the que.

Why bother? If the files are on a single site, many of these sites have waiting periods for multiple files. With JD you just let it works and eventually you will have all the files, if you are lucky.

Be awake with installation. JD "offers" to install other stuff. Just say no. It wants to install FlashGet and the answer is not "no" but "cancel".

Acronis Hard Drive Cloning and Backup

2019-01-21 Just use AOMEI and forget it.

Edit: I currently use Macrium but as yet can not get the recovery working on YUMI.
Edit: I use Easeus To Do Backup for imaging the systems now. Add the boot ISO to YUMI usb for recovery or cloning systems.

Acronis is free if you have one Seagate or WD drive in your system. Win7 makes a workable image of your system but if you don't have a bootable Win7 disk or running XP, Acronis can come in handy. Here are the links to get the free versions. I don't know if the bootable disk you make checks for disk brand to work. I'm guessing only the original install check for the disks.

But how do I get rid of it? ByeTunes does a fair job of getting rid of most of it. If you want the whole ugly scenario see How-To Geek. I would try RevoUninstaller, then ByeTunes, then pick off Bonjour, etc.
